A welcome from Edmonton!

Preparations are well underway to welcome you to Edmonton for ITS Canada's 2009 Annual Conference and General Meeting. The Conference will be held in the heart of downtown Edmonton at the Crowne Plaza Chateau Lacombe. The theme of the Conference is "ITS Transportation Solutions for Growth and Sustainability" Included in the event will be an exhibit area to allow displays of ITS-related technologies and services, as well as technical tours and social events.

Capital of Alberta and home to almost a million residents, Edmonton is a bustling metropolis that also has a uniquely “green” distinction: it has North America’s largest urban park system in the North Saskatchewan River Valley, providing a naturally lush, green corridor for all to enjoy. Edmonton’s music scene is lively, and the City is home to more theatres per capita than anywhere else in Canada. Along with a busy arts and culture scene, the City hosts over 30 annual festivals throughout the year, which is why the City is also known as Canada’s “Festival City.” World-class outdoor recreational facilities include over 70 golf courses. For your shopping needs, besides the downtown core and the outlying malls, there is always the world-famous West Edmonton Mall (the largest mall in North America). If you are ready for more adventures and travel, Edmonton is also called the gateway to Jasper National Park and to the North. With such diversity, you’ll be sure to enjoy something special on your visit to Edmonton. For more information, visit Edmonton tourism.

Program

Simply expanding the infrastructure during periods of growth is not always desirable if it is done at the expense of negative environmental impacts and higher maintenance costs. ITS can provide alternative solutions to growing transportation problems by maximizing capacities and safety of existing infrastructures. ITS Canada invited papers and presentations on how ITS can address the issues of growth and sustainability in these suggested topic areas (not intended to be exhaustive):

Use and integration of advanced traffic management systems, advanced traveller information systems, or advanced public transit systems to manage and mitigate congestion problems on highways and urban roadways

Financial planning and procurement strategies of ITS technologies that address initial capital uptake and sustaining funding of ITS solutions

Road congestion pricing and other ITS economic models/strategies

Integration of ITS elements/technologies into large infrastructure planning, design and construction projects

ITS and resource sectors (oil, forestry, mining, agriculture, etc.) and environmental considerations and impacts.

The technical program includes a variety of technical lectures covering these subjects.

With each passing year, the exhibition provides an increasingly significant contribution for delegates, and continues to grow in both size and popularity.

Banquet Speaker: The Future is ITS!

Is there an ITS futurist out there? We have one and he will be the featured speaker at our annual gala banquet on Tuesday, May 12th in Edmonton. Dewar Donnithorne-Tait (MA, MBA, FRAeS, FIoD) is the President and CEO of the Canadian Centre for Unmanned Vehicle Systems (www.ccuvs.com).

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Dewar spent more than 20 years in government service in operations, intelligence and security, NATO, and research and development. His involvement with unmanned systems started in 1983 with research into sensors for unmanned ground vehicles. His work with unmanned aircraft systems started in 1993. His company, Veitch Moir Ltd., owns and operates an unmanned aircraft system commercially under UK Civil Aviation Authority regulations. He is deeply involved in a range of activities to promote the use of unmanned systems and is particularly focused on the development of international standards. He is active in many European and North American vehicle systems organizations.

Dewar will speak to us about his experiences in the field of unmanned systems, and their interface with ITS on individual, commercial and military levels. He will address broader global trends in ITS and provide some specific examples of cutting-edge use of unmanned systems to support ITS efforts at moving goods and people more effectively, more safely, and more sustainably. Issues include the intermodality and flow of transportation systems, industrial applications in the resource industries, and marine and aerospace applications.

Be prepared for a thought-provoking and entertaining evening!
