ITS Canada Awards Program

 Introduction

ITS Canada and its Members Services Committee would like to thank you for your interest in the ITS Canada Awards Program. 2012 marks the third year of the program, which was originally created to better serve and profile ITS Canada’s membership by acknowledging significant and defining people, projects, and initiatives in our Canadian ITS marketplace.

 Award Categories

There are four award categories under the current ITS Canada Awards Program. These categories include:

 Distinguished ITS Canada Member of the Year Award
 ITS Project/Program Award: Larger Metropolitan Areas, Provincial, or Federal Application Category
 ITS Project/Program Award: Smaller Metropolitan Area or Rural Application Category
 New Canadian Commercial ITS Technology/Innovation/R&D Award.

To enhance the novelty of this award program, only one recipient per year is anticipated for each award category. Furthermore, there is no requirement for awards to be given in each category each year if there are no qualified nominations.

A guideline for the selection of nominees for each award category is provided below.

 Program Schedule and Key Dates

All award nominators and nominees should be aware of the following schedule of key dates:

 Nominations And Submission Requirements

For your use, nomination forms for each award category are provided below. Any nominations received after the due date may not be accepted, and the nominator will be notified accordingly.

All nominations are to remain confidential. Unsuccessful nominees are encouraged to resubmit nominations in subsequent years, if they choose to.

 Evaluation Process

A voluntary evaluation committee will be formed to review and discuss each nomination for the award categories. The evaluation committee will include representatives from across Canada and will represent the private and public sectors, and academia.

Upon the closing of the call for nominations, the evaluation committee will review each nomination for the purpose of discussing the merits. Through a qualitative judgment-based evaluation process of the general criteria for each category, a winner will be selected by the evaluation committee.

Where deemed necessary, the evaluation committee may realign nominations into the most relevant award category, rather than under the category that the nomination was originally submitted.

Where a conflict of interest may be present between an evaluation committee member and a nominated project or person, the committee member will be temporarily excused from further participation for that particular award category.

 Award Credits

Award recipients will be profiled through the following media:

 Formal acknowledgement and award at the ITS Canada Annual Conference and General Meeting (ACGM)
 Poster board presentation at the ITS Canada booth during the ACGM (Poster board preparation is the option of the award winner)
 Announcement on the ITS Canada website
 Announcement within the ITS Canada Newsletter
 Email notification to the ITS Canada membership
 Forward list of award winners to other associations for announcement in their respective publications.

 Formal Award Announcement And Venue

Awards for each category will be formally announced, and recipients awarded, at a special awards ceremony and gala evening dinner to be held at the 2012 ITS Canada Annual Conference and General Meeting. Each recipient, or its designated representative in the case of an agency, is requested to be present to personally receive the award. A statement indicating who, on behalf of the nominated person/organization, will be accepting, should they win, is requested to be indicated (if possible) in the nomination submission.

 Award Critieria

Distinguished ITS Canada Member of the Year Award

• Nominator cannot nominate him/herself.
• Nominated individual must have been an ITS Canada member for at least 3 years.
• Individual must be nominated and seconded by ITS Canada members from two separate organizations.
• Individual must generally be well regarded by his/her peers within the ITS marketplace.
• Individual must have had significant contribution in the design, management, and/or undertaking of ITS projects/programs in Canada and/or internationally.
• Evidence of individual’s promotion of ITS across Canada and/or internationally, or direct contribution to fulfilling ITS Canada goals/objectives, should be described in the submitted profile.
• Award winner must be committed to receiving the award in person at the Annual Conference.

ITS Project/Program Award: Larger Metropolitan Areas, Provincial, or Federal Application Category

• Nominator may be an employee of the nominated entity.
• Open to municipalities with CMA population > 300,000, provincial, or federal agencies.
• Nominated projects are preferred to have been completed/initiated and in proven operation within the last 3 years.
• In the case of a submission by a city, the project/program must not be a regional municipality, provincial, or federally-led initiative to be eligible. However projects/programs with partnerships and funding from higher order municipalities and governments are acceptable.
• In the case of a regional municipality submission, the project/program must not be led by a provincial or federal government initiative to be eligible. However, project/program partnerships and funding from provincial and/or federal governments are acceptable.
• In the case of a provincial government submission, the project/program must not be led by a federal government initiative to be eligible. However project/program partnerships and funding from the federal government is acceptable.
• Projects/programs must demonstrate a significant and/or notable advancement of ITS services in the geographic area of application. Minor extensions of existing systems are not considered significant.
• Projects may also be an ITS Integration Project that demonstrates the integration of ITS systems in accordance with the Canadian ITS Architecture. Integrated systems must originally be independent of each other, or non-existent in the case of an addition of a new system, prior to the integration. Integration between systems must be significant and/or notable with a reasonable amount of data shared between the two systems.
• Award winner representative is expected to receive the award in person at the ACGM.

ITS Project/Program Award: Smaller Metropolitan Area or Rural Application Category

• Nominator may be an employee of the nominated entity.
• Open to municipalities with CMA/CA population < 300,000 and to rural areas with a population of less than 10,000 people and/or population densities of less than 400 people per square kilometer.
• Project/program may be a part of a regional municipality, provincial, and/or federally-led initiative.
• Projects/programs must demonstrate a significant and/or notable advancement of ITS services in the geographic area of application. Minor extensions of existing systems are not considered significant.
• Projects may also be an ITS Integration Project that demonstrates the integration of ITS systems in accordance with the Canadian ITS Architecture. Integrated systems must originally be independent of each other, or non-existent in the case of an addition of a new system, prior to the integration. Integration between systems must be significant and/or notable with a reasonable amount of data shared between the two systems.
• Project/program is preferred to have been completed/initiated in the last 3 years.
• Award winner representative is expected to receive the award in person at the ACGM.

New Canadian Commercial ITS Technology/Innovation/R&D Award

• Nominator may be an employee of the firm or institution.
• Nominated product has been developed by a Canadian-based firm or institution. The product must be successfully deployed and in proven operation either in Canada or internationally. In the case of a new version of an existing product being released, it must be a meaningful upgrade from the existing model or version to be eligible. Preferred that product is not older than 3 years in the Canadian marketplace.
• R&D project/program must be recognized publicly and not part of an internal R&D activity associated with a private sector product. Projects may include new innovative ways of applying and utilizing existing technologies in new environments. A “near-ready” market application for the R&D conducted would be a benefit under the evaluation.
• Firm/institution must be a member of ITS Canada and in good standing.
• Award winner representative is expected to receive the award in person at the ACGM.
