ITS Canada Michel Van Aerde Memorial Scholarship for Graduate Study in ITS
2009 Recipient

The Education and Training Committee is pleased to announce the recipient of ITS Canada's Michel Van Aerde Memorial Scholarship for 2009. The award is made through a competitive process to a student registered full-time in a graduate studies program at a Canadian university related to intelligent transportation systems (ITS). In 2009, the recipient will receive $5,000.

Mohamed El Esawey is a graduate student in the fourth year of his doctoral program in Civil Engineering (Transportation Engineering) at the University of British Columbia. He did his undergraduate and Masters degree studies at Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt. His research topic is entitled, “Travel Time Estimation in Urban Areas Using Vehicles as Probes”. He successfully defended his research proposal and expects to graduate in May 2010. He has an excellent academic record and has acquired extensive experience in research and teaching assignments at both Ain Shams and UBC. He has co-authored six publications and is active in four professional and educational societies. His field experience includes traffic surveys in Cairo and Al-Khartoum. As the Principle Investigator, he led a study group that produced a report on the development and operation of the ITS Laboratory at UBC. In his application for the scholarship, he demonstrated a clear understanding of ITS, the benefits of ITS, and the purpose and role of the Canadian ITS Architecture and Standards. Mohamed has set a career goal to become a university professor and to work especially for academic-industry partnerships and cooperation.

ITS Canada extends congratulations to Mohamed, and wishes him every success in his graduate studies.

We thank all the candidates who competed for the 2009 award, and invite potential applicants to watch the website for future scholarship opportunities.
