ITS Standards
Program
ITS
standards are industry-consensus standards that define how system
components operate within a consistent framework, which is the
National ITS Architecture .
The program is working toward the widespread use of standards
to encourage the interoperability of ITS systems. Through cooperative
agreements with five standards development organizations (SDOs),
the Standards Program is accelerating development of about 100
non-proprietary, industry-based, consensus ITS standards, and
is encouraging public-sector participation in the development
process.

ITS Standards Testing
Testing is an important step toward interoperable ITS systems
because it provides information to potential users on the reliability,
inter-operability, functionality, and performance of systems
based upon the standards. The objective of ITS standards testing
activities is to "prove" the standards in real transportation
settings and build confidence in the standards. The U.S. DOTs
program to test ITS standards is being carried out by the Battelle
Memorial Institute.

Traffic Management Data Dictionary (TMDD)
The Traffic Management Data Dictionary and Message Sets for
External Traffic Management Center Communications Standards
work together to provide a high level of interoperability among
regional and local systems/centers, providing consistent names,
definitions, and concepts similar to spelling and parts of speech
to the word-like ãdata elementsä. The TMDD enables concepts
from traffic management to be defined and used in the same way
by different systems and centers, while also providing for the
use of locally unique data elements to recognize the individuality
of each system or center.

NTCIP
is a joint standardization project of AASHTO, ITE and NEMA,
with funding from the FHWA. Those new to the NTCIP should download
