Kapsch TrafficCom Opens TDM Protocol

Kapsch and E-ZPass® Group paves the way for nationwide electronic tolling interoperability

McLean, VA/Vienna, April 25, 2013 – Kapsch TrafficCom North America (Kapsch), a subsidiary of Kapsch TrafficCom AG, today announced the release and publication of its Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) specification to accelerate the efforts of nationwide electronic tolling interoperability. Kapsch currently uses the TDM protocol to build and supply electronic toll collection (ETC) tag and reader equipment for the E-ZPass Group and other customers throughout North America. Providing open and free access to the Kapsch TDM protocol is an important contribution from Kapsch in support of nationwide electronic tolling interoperability and will provide an open platform for industry compliance with the federal mandate Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act(MAP-21).

To ensure the TDM protocol remains open, Kapsch is making it available to all interested parties royalty free in perpetuity and is also granting the right to sublicense the protocol. The TDM specification can be downloaded from the Kapsch TrafficCom website at www.kapsch.net/us/ktc. The specification is also available on the E-ZPassInteroperability page at www.e-zpassiag.com/interoperability.

“Open technology benefits everyone and accelerates the adoption of standard solutions,” said Chris Murray, President and CEO, Kapsch TrafficCom North America. “We will continue to actively support open, non-proprietary protocols and technologies and are committed to make these available to the market which is to the benefit of everyone in the industry – from toll agencies to the road user.”

“We applaud the efforts of the Kapsch team in supporting the 25 member agencies of the E-ZPass Group with our efforts to advance nationwide interoperability of electronic toll collection systems,” said PJ Wilkins, Executive Director, E-ZPass Group. “The E-ZPass Group has and will continue to support industry efforts toward nationwide interoperability. The release of the TDM protocol for both tags and readers is a significant step towards that goal.”
