ITS CANADA MISSION TO LONDON
By Colin Rayman, General Manager – ITS Canada
ITS Canada’s Chairman
Joseph Lam led a mission to London, England, from
October 8 to 12, 2006, to the 13th World Congress
on Intelligent Transport Systems and Services. Members
participating in the mission included Applanix Corporation,
Delcan Corporation, IBI Group, Intelligent Mechatronic
Corporation, Novax Industries Limited, and RuggedCom
Corporation. Highlights of the mission were a cocktail
reception sponsored by Ontario’s Ministry of
Economic Development and Trade at the ITS Canada booth,
and a dinner for one hundred specially invited guests,
co-hosted by ITS Canada and Transport Canada on board
the HMS Belfast, located on the Thames River, near
Tower Bridge.

A
cocktail reception sponsored by Ontario’s
Ministry of Economic Development and Trade was
held at ITS Canada’s exhibit booth |
At
the hospitality event, guests were piped on board
and welcomed with beverages before exploring the vessel.
A veteran of the HMS Belfast gave a talk about the
history and missions that the cruiser was involved
with before guests sat down for dinner. The HMS Belfast
was launched in March 1938 and served throughout the
Second World War and later supported UN Forces in
Korea, remaining in service until 1965. In 1971, she
was saved as a unique reminder of Britain’s
naval heritage. Now owned and managed by the Imperial
War Museum, she is a popular tourist attraction permanently
moored between London Bridge and Tower Bridge.
ITS
Canada’s hospitality event provided an opportunity
to network with leading industry participants from
around the world, including the United States, Europe,
South America, Africa, Australia and Asia. Chairman
Joseph Lam and Susan Spencer of Transport Canada were
on hand to provide welcoming remarks. Also welcoming
guests were Canada’s and Ontario’s Trade
Commissioners stationed in London.
The
13th World Congress on ITS was an outstanding success,
with over 7,000 participants from 75 countries representing
government, academia and the private sector. The Congress
included sessions, technical tours, social events,
networking opportunities and a large exhibit hall,
which featured many exhibits that attracted over 3,900
different visitors.
ITS
Canada has organized a mission to ITS World Congresses
each year since the 4th ITS World Congress in Berlin.
Toronto was host for the 6th ITS World Congress in
1999, and ITS World Congress missions have become
a valuable means of outreach to partners and potential
clients in other countries. The event raises the profile
of Canada’s ITS community among many delegates
to the World Congress, and is a successful means of
projecting member interests to a very targeted audience.

EIS
Electronic Integrated Systems Inc. has entered
into an agreement with Blackhawk Enterprises to supply
24 Remote Traffic Microwave Sensor (RTMS) devices
for Chattanooga ’s Fog Detection System in Tennessee . This brings the total numbers of RTMS detectors installed in Tennessee to over 900. RTMS is a sensor for the detection and measurement of traffic, providing per-lane presence, volume, occupancy, speed and classification information in up to eight detection zones simultaneously. EIS has also completed installation of RTMS detectors for the SCOOT system in Collier County, Florida. The project involved 165 detectors – a combination
of RTMS SPIDER systems and inductive loops. The SPIDER
was installed at 16 intersections with 16 solar-powered
wireless DSS radio RTMS sensors monitoring a total
of 65 lanes. For more information, visit www.eistraffic.com.

Novax
Industries has launched TransPOD, a multilayered applications-based technology, providing Transit Signal Priority (TSP), Emergency Vehicle Preemption and a host of MISPTM Municipal Infrastructure Service Products across a secure mobile communications architecture. The combination of GPS, inertial navigation and distance measuring allows each TransPOD bus a determination of location with precision, even in urban canyons and underground parking lots. This facilitates a range of benefits, from automated next-stop announcements to location-based advertisements. In terms of TSP and Emergency Vehicle Preemption, Novax has developed a comprehensive range of criteria that can be applied. TransPOD's ability to communicate across virtually any wireless communications architecture WiFi, 3G-4G, HSDPA, EVDO allows substantial operating and service enhancements, such as AVL, emergency video from the bus, VOIP communications (driver as well as passengers), remote telemetry such as passenger counts, fares collected and status of onboard systems (engine parameters) and a variety of public service opportunities including Internet access. For more information, visit www.novax.com.

Traficon
has signed with Traffic Systems, specialists in traffic
signal engineering design, as UK and Northern Ireland
distributors for Traficon's Traficam sensor. The sensor
eliminates the need for installing road loops by imposing
virtual loops covering up to eight lanes, and they
are already on trial in several locations. For more
information, visit: www.traficon.com.

On
October 12, 2006, TransLink released
its business case for the Evergreen Light Rapid Transit
Line to the North East Sector. The Evergreen Line
will convert 1.9 million annual car trips to transit,
growing to 3.6 million trips per year by 2021. Giving
the growing population of the North East Sector access
to the region’s rapid transit network will attract
5 million new riders to transit when the Millennium
Line and bus improvements are included. As a result,
the line will cover 94 percent of its annual operating
costs in 2013 and will more than cover its operating
costs by 2021. One of its greatest benefits will be
the effectiveness of rapid rail transit to convert
single-occupant vehicle trips to public transit. Without
a viable rapid transit alternative, by 2021 there
will be almost 50,000 more vehicles in the North East
Sector than there are today, and the competition for
road capacity will become even more intense. For more
information, visit TransLink’s website and select
Rapid Transit Expansion: www.translink.bc.ca/Plans_Projects.
