Introduction
Transport
Canada, in partnership with ITS Canada,
organized a one-day XML Workshop in conjunction with ITS
Canada’s 10th Annual Conference & General Meeting
in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. The workshop was held
on Wednesday, May 2, 2007.
Background
XML is increasingly
being used for a wide variety of data transfer applications
and there has been much discussion regarding the need
for an XML file format. Some stakeholders in traveller
information services have identified the need in Canada
for a consistent file format, while other stakeholders
have expressed the view that the existing standards contain
all of the necessary information.
The workshop,
therefore, attempted to provide a forum for discussion
of these questions, with the end objective of identifying
what, if any, further work in this area of XML is required.
The workshop was comprised of two parts:
1. A brief review
of the context including the current methods for traffic
data transfer, existing standards and industry trends
2. A discussion
to identify issues/possible shortcomings of the existing
XML standards for traffic data files and, if necessary,
to develop options and future steps for a consistent file
format for bulk traffic data exchange.
The workshop
was targeted at public and private-sector organizations
and ITS professionals in Canada involved in traveller
information services, traffic management, and related
standards activities.
