Plan now to come to Ottawa in Canada's National Capital Region!
ITS Canada is now organizing our 2010 Annual Conference and General Meeting, to be held in Ottawa from June 13-16, 2010. The overall Conference theme is “ITS: For Efficient, Safe and Clean Transport”, recognizing the important role that intelligent transportation plays in moving people and goods efficiently, safely and sustainably across the country. The Conference is your opportunity to hear invited Canadian and international speakers, learn about new policy and program developments, and find out about the latest innovations and how they are being creatively integrated and successfully implemented.
Simultaneous interpretation (English/French) will be available during plenary sessions and for luncheon speakers.

About Ottawa
Ottawa is Canada's capital and the country's fourth largest metropolis. Located in Canada's National Captial Region in eastern Ontario just across the majestic Ottawa River from Gatineau, Quebec, Ottawa provides a wide variety of attractions. Historic Parliament Hill is the seat of Canada's national government and the setting for pomp, ceremony and celebration. Ottawa's ByWard Market offers one-of-a-kind shops and boutiques, over 80 restaurants and cafés, a thriving nightlife, and Canada's oldest continuously operating farmers' market. Cosmopolitan and yet surprisingly intimate, Ottawa is a place where you can immerse yourself in Canadiana and culture, embrace and enjoy the great outdoors (even in the heart of the city where the Rideau Canal winds its way through), and shop and dine in a relaxed urban setting of distinctive neighbourhoods and districts. June is an ideal time of year to visit, with warm temperatures, sunny skies, and flowers in bloom. For more information, view the companion tourist information, or visit Ottawa Tourism.

TOUR 3: Société de transport de l’Outaouais - Tuesday, June 15 ($30 + GST) Tour departs hotel on STO bus at 1:30 p.m. ~ return to hotel by 3:30 p.m.
New Control Room Tour
The mission of the Société de transport de l’Outaouais (STO) is to provide over 262,000 residents in greater Gatineau and its neighbouring municipalities with reliable, efficient and affordable public transit service. The control centre enables STO to monitor and manage a fleet of 245 buses during peak periods. Images from the City of Ottawa traffic control centre, the Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ) and STO’s infrastructures allow STO to monitor traffic and ensure the safety of its facilities and system. The control centre responds to emergency calls from STO personnel and intervenes when incidents occur in the system. The control centre ensures communication with drivers and inspectors on the road, and with different partners (police, fire department, Cities of Ottawa and Gatineau, OC Transpo, MTQ). The centre operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Presentation and demonstration of the fare collection system
In 1999, STO introduced its first smart card computerized fare payment system. Today, 82 percent of riders use the smart card for travel on the public transit system. In 2010, STO will introduce the second generation of its fare payment system by replacing the equipment on buses and at ticket retail outlets. The current Mifare smart card will be replaced with a higher performance Desfire card offering greater security features. This equipment will ensure interoperability with OC Transpo, which also plans to introduce a smart card fare collection system in 2011. Implementing a computerized fare collection system has resulted in considerable gains in terms of greater flexibility for fares, and has helped to increase customer loyalty and significantly reduce fraud.

TOUR 4: OC Transpo - Wednesday, June 16 ($30 + GST) Tour departs hotel on OC Transpo bus at 10:00 a.m. ~ return to hotel by noon
OC Transpo provides comprehensive transit services to nearly one million people in Ottawa. The OC Transpo fleet has over 1,000 buses and three trains serving nearly 370,000 daily riders.
Transitway System
OC Transpo's Transitway is a dedicated road system that runs from one end of Ottawa to the other, and is open only to OC Transpo and emergency vehicles. Since public vehicles are forbidden access to the Transitway, it is unaffected by regular traffic delays. This means quick, comfortable and easy travel, no matter what time of day.
Operations Control Centre
Responsible for the delivery of daily service, both conventional and light rail, the Operations Control Centre monitors and manages a full complement of buses: 883 during rush hour and 455 off peak, plus two trains on a 15-minute schedule. Responding to emergency calls from bus operations staff (including medical emergencies, assaults, lost persons and reporting of serious accidents), the Centre monitors on-time delivery using GPS technology, and monitors traffic delays on wall cubes while viewing video images from the City of Ottawa’s Traffic Control Centre. The Centre responds and sets up detours, and represents Risk Management at an accident scene when a commission bus is involved, as well as handling requests from partners (Ottawa Police, Ottawa Fire, EMS) for buses to mobilize and transport. Hours of operation: 24/7.
