Introduction
ITS
Canada, in association with the UBC Sauder School of Business,
and sponsored by Transport Canada , will conduct a forum
on the efficiency and security of the movement of goods
at ports, along corridors and across borders.
ITS Canada is a recognized facilitator and source of expertise for many agencies and stakeholders in Canada and the United States. This forum is one in a series being conducted by ITS Canada to improve the development and application of Intelligent Transportation Systems for the benefit of industry users. The forum is supported through the activities of:
 |
British Columbia Ministry of Transportation |
 |
The Bureau of Intelligent Transportation
Systems and Freight Security (BITSAFS) in the UBC Sauder
School of Business |
 |
The Chartered Institute of Logistics
and Transport in North America , and |
 |
The Canadian Transportation Research
Forum. |
The
goal of the forum is to provide the following benefits:
 |
Up-to-date
information: an information exchange on
current and planned technology, systems, projects,
and products that involve the corridors, ports and
borders that serve the Pacific Gateway |
 |
New
ideas for practical applications: a discussion
forum for additional technological applications or projects
that may assist border agencies, ports, and carriers
in the Region to improve efficiency, safety, and security
of operations |
 |
A
networking and learning opportunity: that
will enable stakeholders to identify and contact others
with similar interests, locations, projects, or problems
|
 |
Access
to resources: a recognized source for advice
and information on intelligent transportation systems,
including border crossing, port and security technologies,
systems and applications in Canada . |
This
forum will be of special interest to parties involved in
trade and commerce in the Pacific Gateway, and connected
rail and road border crossings, including:
 |
Freight
carriers (i.e., trucking companies, railways, air and
waterborne carriers) |
 |
Customs
brokers, freight forwarders, and ãthird partyä logistics
service providers |
 |
Government
departments and agencies at all levels of jurisdiction
|
 |
Port
and airport authorities |
 |
Terminal
operators |
 |
Border
crossing agencies and stakeholders |
 |
ITS
product suppliers, consultants and system integrators
|
 |
Trade
organizations and stakeholders. |
Program
The
forum will include one and a half days for sessions, to
be followed by freight facility tours. The program is designed
to inform and engage participants from the goods movement
industry in the region.
 |
An opening keynote address
will bring the audience up to date on current international
developments in ITS and security measures, with emphasis
on the benefits related to efficiency, service and
cost from exploiting new information resources. |
 |
Panel discussions will feature
brief introductory remarks by leaders in their respective
fields, followed by open discussion and questions
from the audience at large. Three panels will progress
from describing new developments in intelligent ports
and border crossings, through discussions of industry
practices, to presentation of implementation case
studies. |
 |
Breakout discussion groups will
also provide participants with opportunities to interact
on a more personal level while addressing issues, gaps
in technology and applications, and suggestions to ITS
Canada for new initiatives for continuous improvement.
