Alberta’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Branch (AB CVEB) has implemented the Smart Roadside Inspection Systems (SRIS), at four of their vehicle inspection stations (VIS) with the assistance of the vendor, Intelligent Imaging Systems (IIS), of Edmonton. It will change the way commercial motor vehicle (CMV) safety screening is conducted province-wide. It provides:
• a free-flow roadside inspection system technology, operating at mainline or
ramp speed, not requiring any additional technology or components on the CMV
• an ability to identify only high-risk CMV for further inspection
• a management tool that improves the efficiency and effectiveness of the
Province’s commercial vehicle operations (CVO)
• inspectors with a tool to focus their resources more efficiently and effectively
on CMVs that pose the most risk to transportation safety and security
The system includes a number of firsts, such as the first CMV hazardous materials (HazMat) placard system in North America that identifies and flags carriers transporting dangerous goods, the first CMV automated thermal imaging solution integrated into any screening system, and the first agency in Canada with the ability to automatically screen and identify high risk U.S. carriers travelling through the Province, among many others.
