" ATMS and Covid-19 -  Past, Current, Future - Challenges, Opportunities, Needs" - a Virtual Panel?" hosted by the ATMS Technical Committee

  • Municipalities and provincial governments have a mandate and responsibility to provide quality transportation services and to do so by effectively managing their infrastructure.  The arrival of Covid-19 hasn’t changed this need, however the pandemic has brought about evolving changes, new challenges and opportunities, and in some cases a broader scope of application for advanced traffic management and intelligent transportation systems.  Now over 8 months later, we discussed the changes, challenges, and opportunities municipal and provincial transportation management leaders from across the country have been experiencing along with the actions taken to continue to provide quality service.  What has worked well, what lessons have been learned, and how are transportation agencies preparing for the near future. This panel discussion was moderated by Jonathan Foord, Senior Manager, Global Infrastructure Advisory, KPMG LLP & Chair ITS Canada ATMS Technical Committee and included panelists Sameer Patil (City of Calgary, Karamjeet Deogan (BC Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure and Patrick Ricci (Ville de Montréal).

What followed was public engagement, social media, news media coverage, and DMS messages going viral. These messages are now being shared and used by more than 30 agencies across the USA. Now 7 years on, we heard from Iowa DOT on their experience, the impact of these messages and lessons learned in developing the ‘Message Mondays’ program and what’s next.
